One of the longest-running and most widely used handgun powders, aimed at standard-pressure target and general-purpose loads across most common handgun cartridges.
Half the handgun benches in America run on this. It is a fast, clean, well-mannered ball powder for standard-pressure .38 Special, .45 ACP and 9mm target loads, it meters superbly, and it is the same propellant Hodgdon sells as HP-38, one of the very few brand equivalences that traces to a manufacturer statement rather than forum lore. In practice that doubles your shelf options when you are hunting for powder. Two cautions: use the data for the label in front of you rather than crossing very old data between the two names, and because the charge volume is small, a double charge in a large case is not obvious.

Grain shape
Spherical ball powder, and therefore degressive: surface area falls as each sphere burns, so energy comes out early and fast, which is a fine match for light target loads and unforgiving if you go over. Round kernels flow and meter better than anything else on this list, which is why it survives on progressive presses.

Winchester canister propellants are spherical BALL POWDER products made in the USA; the round kernels meter precisely through volumetric powder measures. Winchester cites consistency, clean burning and low flash. Listed as subsonic-capable and not listed as temperature stable. It is generally understood to be the same propellant Hodgdon sells as HP-38.

Unverified community anecdote. The following is a summary of what handloaders report in public forums. It is not manufacturer information, it has not been tested, it may be wrong, and it contains no load data by design. Treat it as colour, not guidance.
The community treats HP-38 and W231 as the same product under two labels, sourced to a direct statement from the manufacturer and a recorded interview — the difference being brand licensing cost. This is one of the few equivalences r/reloading treats as settled rather than rumor.
