Shape Is the Product

How smokeless powder is actually made, and why every grain looks the way it does

Pick up a kernel of H4831 and a kernel of Titegroup. Both are nitrocellulose. The difference between them is geometry — and that difference is the entire product.

The Propellant Squeeze

Gunpowder costs, supply, and industry direction — August 2026

Smokeless powder is the tightest link in the ammunition supply chain, and it is tight for structural reasons that will not resolve in 2026 or 2027. The constraint is not blending capacity. It is nitrocellulose.

Who Actually Makes Your Powder

The dozen facilities behind every label on the shelf — and where each stands in 2026

Most of the powder brands you know are not manufacturers. There are perhaps a dozen plants on earth that matter for sporting propellant. Here is who they are, how they got here, and what shape they're in.

The Great Unbundling

How the powder industry took itself apart — and why it is putting itself back together

In 1912 a federal court broke up the DuPont powder trust. In 2026 a single corporate group finished assembling nitrocellulose in Germany, nitroglycerin in Saxony, a Czech propellant house, and the American ammunition brands that consume them. The arc between those dates is the story.

Why a sensor company runs a powder desk

We build sensors that measure what actually falls into the case, so we spend our working lives on powder. Tracking what it costs and who has it is the same subject from the other end — not a stretch, just the part of it that happens before the press.

There is a practical link as well, though it is not the obvious one. Scarcity does not make a charge error worse; a double charge is a double charge whatever the powder cost. What scarcity does is force substitution — a different powder, a re-set measure, a load worked up from scratch. That is when mistakes actually happen. Not the thousandth identical round. The first one after you changed something.
