Rock Canyon Munitions started the way most good reloading gear starts: at the bench, with a problem that wouldn't go away.

RCM was born inside a high-volume loading operation running more than twenty Mark 7 presses. At that scale, you don't just use your equipment — you learn every one of its weaknesses. And we found them fast.

Twenty presses, three problems

The press electronics of the day had real gaps. Sensors wouldn't accumulate their readings, so if one sensor tripped before the digital powder check, the powder check reading simply never displayed — the press was blind to it, and so were we. The probe-style powder check was pulling powder out of our casings on every stroke; we had powder scattered across the backs of our machines and wasted with every run. And when the digital powder probe stuck in the up position, the press would happily report that every charge was within specification — while checking nothing at all.

We didn't just complain about these problems. We took them to Mark 7, and to their credit, they listened. Software updates followed: sensor readings now accumulate and display together, and a change to the powder check circuit means that today, if the probe sticks up, the press tells you. Some of the safeguards that protect Mark 7 loaders right now exist because our operation found the failures first.

The first marketed laser powder check

But fixing the software could only take probe technology so far. In early 2021, we faced an uncomfortable truth: even with everything addressed, our customers were still getting squibs from ammunition loaded on our presses. Anyone who has run a progressive press at volume knows what's at stake — a squib that stops a match cold, or a double charge that destroys a firearm, or worse. A powder check that spills powder, sticks in cases, and misses bad charges wasn't good enough for our ammunition. It isn't good enough for yours either.

So we set out to build something better.

We spent the next two and a half years developing a fundamentally different approach: no-contact laser measurement. No probe touching the powder. No spills, no suction, no stuck probes — just micrometer-level accuracy on every single drop, at full press speed. Laser measurement is unforgiving; it only works if the engineering behind it is right. We tested every design on our own presses first, refined the electronics, and rewrote our programming early on so our sensors would integrate properly with Mark 7 logic failsafes — the kind of detail you only get right when you actually load ammunition for a living.

In October 2023, we sold our first RCM Laser Powder Check. It was the first marketed laser powder check in the industry, and within weeks our sensors were shipping internationally.

Where we are today

What started as one sensor is now a full quality-control system for the modern reloading bench: the Laser Powder Check Pro, Bullet Check Pro, case presence sensors, centering dies, and dashboards that give loaders real data on every round.

Today, RCM sensors run on hobbyist benches and inside some of the largest ammunition companies in the world. When commercial loaders producing millions of rounds a year trust a sensor to catch a bad charge, that says more than any spec sheet could.

We've been flattered — and occasionally amused — to see others try to copy what we built. But there's a difference between copying the shape of a product and understanding the years of engineering inside it. That difference shows up in the readings, in the failsafes, and in the rounds that never leave your bench with a bad charge. When people get tired of the imitations, they come to us. Why we do it

Reloading is precision work, and the equipment protecting your ammunition should be at least as precise as the ammunition itself. Our mission is simple: build better sensors for today's modern equipment, test them on our own presses before they ever reach yours, and stand behind every unit we ship.

We found these problems because we lived them, twenty presses at a time. We built the solution because nobody else had.
