Two Loaders, One Argument: The $200 Mark 7 PowderCheck vs. the RCM Laser

Stand near the loading-room tables at any major match and you will eventually hear this argument. Two people who both run Mark 7 presses, both load tens of thousands of rounds a year, and both take squibs and double charges dead seriously — reaching opposite conclusions about the same $199.95 sensor. We're going to tell it the way we actually hear it, as a conversation between two composite loaders. Neither is a real person; both are stitched together from hundreds of real phone calls, match conversations, and forum threads. Full disclosure, twice over: we make the laser powder check one of them is defending, and — this matters to the story — we also make a $39.99 centering die that fixes the most common complaints about the Mark 7 sensor the other one is defending. We profit either way, so we have no reason to strawman either side. Call them the Pragmatist and the Perfectionist.

The Pragmatist: “It's $199.95 and it already stops my press”

The Pragmatist's case deserves to be made properly, because it is genuinely strong. Mark 7's PowderCheck sensor costs $199.95, comes from the company that built the press, integrates natively with the Autodrive software, ships with four probes (small and large, pistol and rifle), and — the part that matters — automatically stops the machine when it detects a bad charge. Not an alarm you might hear over the case feeder. A stop.

His logic runs like this: the accidents that destroy guns and hands are gross errors. A double charge of fast pistol powder is a 100% deviation. A squib is a total absence. You do not need micrometer resolution to catch a charge that is twice what it should be or isn't there at all — you need a check that is present, automatic, and always on. The factory sensor does that for $200. The laser starts at $499.99. “That difference is a case of primers and a jug of powder,” he says. “My 9mm range ammo does not care about a tenth of a grain, and neither do I. I bought the sensor, I set the windows, and I load safer than ninety percent of the people telling me to spend more.”

He is not wrong about any of that. If the choice is the Mark 7 PowderCheck or nothing, buy the PowderCheck today — we have said exactly that in print before, and we'll keep saying it.

The Perfectionist: “Detection isn't measurement”

The Perfectionist doesn't dispute a word of the price math. Her argument is about what the two devices fundamentally are. The Mark 7 sensor lowers a probe into each charged case and reads its position through over-charge and under-charge windows — a contact-based pass/fail gate. The RCM laser measures the actual powder level in every case, digitally, at micrometer-level resolution, without anything touching the case or the powder. One tells you a charge was outside a window. The other tells you what the charge was.

From that single difference, she argues, everything else follows. Contact means the probe family of problems: powder spray and spills, suction pulling powder out of the case, probe strikes on case walls, and swapping probes between cartridges. No contact means none of that exists. Pass/fail windows mean the windows must be set wide enough to tolerate the system's own mechanical noise — which is exactly the margin where a partial undercharge hides. Measurement means the windows can be as tight as the process itself: one of our customers running 9mm at 1,000 rounds per hour holds windows tight enough to catch undercharges of .05 grain with zero false high alarms (his writeup).

Then she plays her strongest card, and it isn't resolution — it's psychology. “Browse the owner forums,” she says. “The recurring PowderCheck complaint isn't that it misses charges. It's false alarms — famously, alarming on empty stations while the press starts up or runs empty. And every false alarm trains you to mash the resume button a little faster. A check that cries wolf doesn't just annoy you; it quietly converts itself into no check at all. The most dangerous press in the room is the one whose operator has learned to clear errors without looking.” Alarm fatigue is a documented failure mode in every industry that runs on alarms, and she's right to weaponize it.

Finally: the log. Pro-model lasers record every round — timestamps, charge history, trend graphs, CSV export. “When my powder measure starts drifting at round 600, I see the trend before it leaves the window. When someone asks whether Tuesday's batch was clean, I don't say I think so. I open the file.”

The Pragmatist pushes back — with our own catalog

Here's where the argument gets interesting, because the Pragmatist's rebuttal is built partly out of parts we sell. “Those false alarms are fixable,” he says, “and the laser people know it, because they sell the fix. Thirty-nine dollars.”

He's right. The Mark 7 Powder Check Centering Die exists because the factory probe's two loudest problems — powder spray around the probe and the probe striking case walls — are mostly case-presentation problems, not sensor problems. The die centers every case to the probe and increases airflow around it. It's $39.99 (or three-get-one-free in the bundle), and it makes the $199.95 sensor meaningfully better at being what it is. Add case-presence gating to kill the empty-station alarms, tune the windows patiently per our false-alarm guide, sort your brass for the tight loads, and the factory sensor settles down considerably. “So the real comparison,” the Pragmatist concludes, “isn't $200 versus $500. It's $240 with the die versus $500-plus. And for range ammo, tuned and centered, the probe catches everything I actually fear.”

That is the strongest version of the budget case, and any comparison that doesn't include it is a sales pitch.

The Perfectionist's last word: the ceiling

“Everything you just described,” she answers, “is a project. Center the cases — with their die. Gate the stations. Match the probes. Map the noise floor. Tune the windows. Sort the brass. Do all of it well, and you have a good probe system running at the very best a contact probe can do — and that best is still a pass/fail gate whose windows are set by mechanical repeatability, not by your ammunition's requirements. I did that project. Then I realized I'd spent my weekends optimizing a $200 sensor up to its ceiling, when the laser starts above that ceiling on day one: no probes to match, no spills to manage, one-button setting changes, windows set by what my load needs, and a log that proves every session. The extra $300 didn't buy me a fancier alarm. It bought back the project — and it ended the argument about whether an alarm was real, because I can read the measurement that fired it.”

And for loaders whose needs are commercial — customer ammo, liability, QC records — she notes the log isn't a luxury: a timestamped CSV trail is the difference between asserting your process and proving it. Where they actually agree

Listen long enough and the two of them converge on more than they'd admit. Either sensor beats nothing by a mile — the unchecked press is the one that produces the kaboom stories. Automatic press-stop beats any alarm a human has to hear. Case presentation is the foundation under any check, probe or laser — a centering die tightens both systems. Empty-station gating makes any powder check quieter and more trustworthy. Our verdict — and our conflict of interest, resolved honestly

We make the laser, so weight our verdict accordingly — but notice that both loaders leave this argument buying something from us, and one of them spends $39.99, not $499.99. If your budget is $200 and your ammunition is range and practice fodder, the Pragmatist is right: buy Mark 7's PowderCheck, put our centering die under it, gate your empty stations, and you will load safer than the vast majority of progressive reloaders.
