Mark 7 PowderCheck False Alarms: Causes, Fixes, and When to Upgrade
A powder check that cries wolf is worse than no powder check at all — because after the tenth false alarm, you stop investigating and start mashing the resume button. Owners on the Mark 7 forums call it sensor fatigue, and it's the most common complaint about the PowderCheck sensor. The good news: most false alarms have identifiable causes and real fixes. Here they are, roughly in order of how often we hear about them.
Empty stations at startup and run-down
The classic: the press starts a run or empties out at the end, stations cycle with no case underneath, and the sensor alarms on the "missing" powder. Owners have publicly wished the check would only fire when a case is actually present — and that's exactly the right instinct. The fix is case-presence gating: know whether a case is at the station before judging its charge. That's a core reason we pair our powder checks with a case presence sensor — it eliminates the empty-station alarm family outright, and it catches tipped and low cases (the depriming-pin killers) as a bonus.
Case position and mixed brass
Any powder check — probe or laser — measures relative to the case underneath it. If the case arrives at the station slightly off-center or sits at a different height than the last one, the reading moves even when the charge is perfect. Mixed range brass is the usual culprit: different manufacturers' cases vary in web thickness and internal volume, so identical charges sit at slightly different heights. Two fixes, in order of cost: run a centering die so every case presents identically (for the Mark 7 probe, ours also increases airflow around the probe, which ends the powder-spray mess), and for your tightest-tolerance loads, sort brass by head stamp. One of our customers documented exactly this: on matched Federal brass his alarms were all real; on mixed brass, every low alarm traced to one brand's case height, not the sensor (his writeup).
Probe fit and alarm windows
The PowderCheck reads through a probe and over/under windows, and the probe has to match the application. A marginal probe fit, or windows set tighter than the system's real-world repeatability, produces intermittent trips that look random. Verify the probe choice for your cartridge, then widen the windows until the alarms stop, then walk them back in — you're mapping the system's true noise floor. If the windows you end up with are too wide to catch the errors you care about (a 0.3 grain undercharge in a 9mm minor load, say), that's not a settings problem anymore; that's the resolution ceiling of a mechanical probe.
When it's not a false alarm
Before blaming the sensor, dump and weigh the tripped case. Powder measures do drift, fine powders do bridge and then dump, and hoppers do run low. A check that trips "randomly" once every few hundred rounds might be catching a real, intermittent metering problem — which is precisely the round you bought it for. This is where round-by-round logging earns its keep: a charge-history graph shows instantly whether trips cluster around a drifting mean (measure problem) or scatter randomly around a stable one (setup problem).
The upgrade question
If you've gated the empty stations, centered the cases, matched the probe, and tuned the windows — and the alarms still won't settle down at the tolerance you actually want — the remaining fix is changing what does the measuring. A laser powder check measures the powder level with no contact: no probe fit to manage, no spills, micrometer-level readings that hold tight windows without noise, automatic press stop on the Autodrive, and logging that shows you why every alarm fired.
