Double Charges in 9mm: Why They Happen on Progressives and How to Catch Them

Ask around any pistol match and you'll find someone who has seen a kaboom: a case head let go, a magazine blown out of the gun, a shooter checking their hand. When the ammo was reloaded 9mm, the usual suspect is a double charge — two drops of powder in one case. Understanding why 9mm specifically is so vulnerable is the first step to never producing one.

Why 9mm is the perfect victim

Competition and range 9mm typically runs 3 to 4.5 grains of a fast-burning powder in a case with far more internal volume than the charge occupies. That combination creates two problems. First, a double charge still fits — it doesn't overflow the case and announce itself the way a doubled case-filling rifle load would. Second, the pressure math is brutal: doubling a fast-powder charge doesn't double the peak pressure, it can multiply it far beyond, in a cartridge already operating around 35,000 PSI. The brass and the gun were never designed for what comes next.

An eyeball check struggles here too. The difference between 3.8 and 7.6 grains at the bottom of a 19mm-deep case, seen from above a moving shell plate under shop lighting, is smaller than you'd hope — and it's exactly the check most loaders are relying on.

How doubles actually happen on a progressive

Almost every double charge traces to an interrupted cycle. You stop mid-stroke to fix a primer, a case feeder jam, a tipped bullet — and when you resume, a case that already received powder passes under the measure again. Short-stroking the handle can do it. So can manually advancing or backing up the shell plate during a fix. So can a distraction as simple as answering a question mid-cycle. The press doesn't remember which cases are charged; only you do, and human memory under interruption is exactly as reliable as you'd expect.

The discipline fix is a hard personal rule: any interruption means you inspect every case on the shell plate before the next stroke — physically look into each one — or you pull them all and start those positions clean. Loaders who've been at this for decades treat that rule as non-negotiable.

The layered defenses

Powder choice is an underrated layer: bulkier powders that fill more of the case make a double visibly overflow or at least look obviously wrong. Where your load recipe allows it, that's free insurance. Lighting and a deliberate look into every charged case is the second layer — genuinely effective at hand-cranked speeds, and genuinely insufficient under an autodrive.

The instrumented layer is a powder check that measures every case. For doubles specifically, even the basic mechanical checks (Powder Cop, Lock-Out Die, Dillon's alarm) will usually catch a full double — a doubled charge is a big signal. The gap is everything short of a full double: the 1.5x partial from a bridged measure, the drifting drop that's creeping toward trouble, and the automation problem that an alarm nobody hears doesn't stop a press running 2,000 rounds an hour. If you suspect you've loaded one

A batch with one double often has a matching squib — the powder had to come from somewhere. If a round ever feels or sounds unusually weak, stop immediately and check the bore before firing again (the full squib procedure is here).
