Bullet Check Pro vs. Standard: Presence Is Only Half the Job
Powder checks get all the attention — squibs and double charges are the failures that wreck guns, so that's where everyone starts. But the bullet stations at the end of the press have their own two failure modes, and they cost real money too: a round with no bullet at all, and a round with the bullet seated at the wrong height. Our two bullet checks split exactly along that line, so here's the Pro vs. Standard answer, straight.
The Standard: a beam the bullet has to break
The Bullet Check Standard uses a beam-type sensor: as each round indexes past at station 9 or 10, the bullet either breaks the beam or it doesn't. Bullet there, press keeps running; bullet missing, the Mark 7 Autodrive stops before the round goes any further. It's a binary question answered reliably, setup is a simple height setting, and installation is quick. At $219.99 it's inexpensive insurance against the missed-bullet round — the one that otherwise ends up as a powder spill in your finished bin, or worse, a case of loose powder crimped shut.
The Pro: pick a spot on the bullet, measure it every round
The Bullet Check Pro answers a better question. Instead of "is a bullet there?", it measures where the bullet actually sits: you pick the spot on the bullet you want to measure from — whatever suits the profile you're loading — and the sensor checks that height on every single round. Run it at station 10, after seating, and it stops the press the moment a bullet isn't at the correct height. Presence detection is included in that, of course — a missing bullet is just the extreme case of a wrong height.
The failure this catches is seating-die walk, and if you haven't been bitten by it yet, it's the sneakiest one on the press. A seating die that's drifting doesn't fail loudly; it moves a little at a time, which means it can put thousands of rounds at the wrong overall length before anyone notices. OAL isn't cosmetic — it affects feeding, and in some loads it affects pressure. The discovery usually happens at the case gauge or the chrono, after the loading session is over, and the remedy is an evening of re-seating or re-crimping rounds one at a time. The Pro turns that into a stopped press at the round where the drift left your window.
What about Mark 7's bullet sensor?
Mark 7 offers its own bullet sensing, built around mirrors — the beam path is folded across the station and back. We've set it up on our own machines, and we'll be blunt about the experience: the mirror alignment is the whole project. Getting the geometry right, keeping it right on a vibrating press, and re-doing it when anything moves is the part owners dread, and it's the reason our sensors don't use mirrors at all. Both RCM bullet checks are direct-sensing units — mount, set, load. Alignment shouldn't be a maintenance item.

Which one do you need?
Pick the Standard if your seating die holds its setting and the risk you're closing out is the missed bullet — for $219.99, every round leaves the press with a bullet in it, guaranteed by a stop rather than your eyesight. Pick the Pro if overall length matters to you: competition loads with tight specs, commercial loading where a customer gets the ammo, long sessions where die walk has time to add up, or simply the wish to never spend another evening re-seating a batch. Same philosophy as our powder checks: the Standard guards against the round that's obviously wrong, and the Pro measures what the press is actually doing, every cycle.
